What is Intellectual Wellness?

As investors, 8 Dimension Ventures admires Intellectual growth as an equally significant force within the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.

Yes, there is a Financial Dimension and it’s vital. But we are firm believers in the concept that smart money follows smart ideas. Intellectual wellness calls for creative thinking, expanding knowledge and skills, curiosity and developing strategies. Sounds like everything you need to form a successful start-up.

During the pandemic, everyone has had to work harder to maintain Intellectual wellness. Opportunities for group brainstorming sessions, professional development conferences and watercooler chats have all been curtailed. Yes, technology has filled the breach to some extent – but Intellectual wellness is supported by Social and Emotional wellness, which are more challenging to grow online.

In the post-secondary education sector, remote learning has filled the gap for the time-being. Online lectures can fill us with facts and theories, but that is not the same as wellness. Most people are looking forward to getting back to in-person classes and workplaces, even if it is only two or three days a week.

The 8 Dimensions of Wellness are all connected and must be balanced for individuals to thrive.

How does Intellectual wellness play out in start-ups? One of the start-ups that we admire is Earthly. It’s involved in Environmental and Social wellness, but its strength is Intellectual. It’s a creative way to help us to reduce our carbon footprint. Earthly follows a three-step process so that one can take personal responsibility for improving the environment:

1)     It offers tools to measure one’s impact and find pathways to reduce carbon;

2)     It proposes a bundle of options to cut carbon through natural solutions, which are science-based and verified by third parties (crucial for ongoing monitoring);

3)     One can see and share the positive impact on Earthly’s platform

As a business, Earthly never stops learning, evolving and educating. An inspiration to us all!
